This Changes Everything.

Everyone has experienced moments in life where a situation, event, circumstance, even a blink of an eye moment has changed everything.

What I know is often we don’t realize the impact of those times until after they have passed; when we realize we are not quite the same as a result. When a tragic event strikes, even our initial thoughts about how things will change are often skewed and re-arranged after a period of time goes by.

A birth, death, accident, move, missed opportunity, accepted risk, health related issue, relational challenge are all considered life changes events. Whether we have lost a loved one, met our soul mate, earned a degree or lost a job, there is an awareness of how these events can change the course of our lives.

But, I often think we miss the subtle things that also change our lives. Things like the decisions we make about how we spend our time, what we eat, where we live, who we call our friends, what we buy and what we believe can make huge impacts on our lives.

One of my clients was an ice skating instructor. She earned a great income until her husband accepted an offer and they needed to move to an area where ice skating rinks were very few and interest in skating was very minimal. That decision changed the direction of her life as well.

A neighbor was sitting pretty for retiring in a few years when he learned he had a debilitating illness and his wife was forced to return to work as they dwindled their saving down taking care of health costs.

Four years ago, I worked with a young man who was just out of the service. He had a great idea and was putting a business plan together. He was out on a fishing trip with some buddies when a good friend offered him a proposition he decided to invest in. He never got his idea of the ground but he had made a substantial amount of money from his investment.

Last week, we learned that a friend’s sister has a significant health issue that came just from eating microwave popcorn several times weekly.

Many insignificant things can actually be stepping stones to very signficant events. Think about courses you chose to take or not take, people you hung on to or let go in your life, timing that was missed or absolutely perfect without really any effort on your part.

We spend so much of our lives planning what’s next we often miss what is now.

As a society we have beenencouraged to always plan for the future and while not inconsequential advice, perhaps even more radical advice is to learn to live in the moment, to observe, discern, evaluate, appreciate and embrace the moment we are in.

There will be countless times when a moment you were perhaps not even aware of was the one that changed everything. If you aren’t really present in the moment, it might be easy to never value what you were really meant to learn from it.

Yes, some moments will be devastating, some exhilarating and some ordinary.

How you react has the potential to change everything.

You can’t change the moment, only how you will react to it.

Regret is a waste of this moment on one that you will never get back, so it’s important to learn to focus on your now as well as your tomorrow.

Yes, I absolutely believe everyone should create a Plan B as a back up to help them financially survive the future, whether it is a little side income or a major business venture.

But, I also believe you should never think where you are now has nothing to do with where you want to be later.

It has everything to do with later, moment upon moment upon moment.

You can spend your time thinking, comparing, evaluating and re-evaluating and miss the moment that was going to change everything; the one you spent acting, doing, creating, evolving, starting.

Actions do speak louder than words. Your actions have the potential to change everything.

You had the past, You may have the future but all you really have now, is now.

What would you really do if you lived in the moment? What could you do today to change everything?

It’s not enough to think about it, but it’s more than enough to act on it.

If you enjoyed this story, would you please give it a little clap or two and come follow along for more. It might change Everything!
